T-Mac chillin' before thrillin'Stat’s All Folks will be a week-to-week stock market look at the standard cumulative categories – points, assists, rebounds, three-pointers made, steals, and blocks.  I’ll be calling out the “bulls” and “bears” in each category, in order to help you assess your portfolio of players on your fantasy basketball team(s) and whether you should sell, hold, and/or diversify your assets.

Note that you won’t always see the superstar player written about in this column, otherwise it would be LeBron James or Steve Nash every week.  So, check out who’s bullish and who’s bearish coming into the week.

Statistics are from December 28th – January 3rd.

POINTS

BULLISH

Tracy McGrady, SG/SF, Houston Rockets
Last Week’s Numbers of Note: 3 G; 33.3 PPG; 56.5 FG%; 55.6 FT%

In the past week, McGrady has been playing like the T-Mac of old and not like an old T-Mac.  In each of his three games, McGrady has scored 31, 38, and 31 points, respectively.  And it hasn’t even been a fluke sort of deal where he just jacked up forty or more shots to get his points.  Look at the field goal percentage above too.  Taking 23 shot attempts per game on average is a lot, but again, look at that percentage from the floor!  No wonder McGrady’s been scoring so much and it speaks well for his health as well, being able to hit that many baskets at a high rate.  I won’t declare him “back” because of the lingering prospect of back spasms that sidelined T-Mac earlier this season, so throw out some feeler deals for more durable players.  Otherwise, hold T-Mac and hope he stays healthy.

Nine threes?!? Are you kidding me? Randomly checking box scores, as that’s what fantasy basketball fans tend to do from time to time, I can’t help but post about the game that’s still underway.  The Memphis Grizzlies are currently beating the Golden State Warriors 130-127…with three minutes still remaining in regulation!  If anyone’s able to watch this game, please let me know if they’re playing this game on half of a court or not.

Neither team is exactly shooting lights out, so there’s only one thing that can attribute to such an evening:

No Defense.

(Update: OK, maybe we can attribute it to a few long balls as well…)

POINTS

BULLISH

Allen Iverson, PG, Philadelphia 76ers
Last Week’s Numbers of Note: 3 G; 40.7 PPG; 44.2 FG%; 90.2 FT%

How does Iverson come back from sitting out two games because of injury?  Here’s the “answer” – AI drops 46 points on the Chicago Bulls in a 123-108 Sixers win his first game back.  The next night against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Iverson scores 31 points, which made many wonder if he was still suffering from injury because he only scored 31 points (sarcasm fully intended).  However, AI dispelled any worries about his scoring deficiencies by hanging 45 points on the Miami Heat the following game.  Iverson is just plain getting sick with it!

Shawn Marion I went to dinner with two friends a couple of weeks ago. As usual, the conversation gravitated towards the entertainment industry. One of them said he gave The Departed a thumbs down because it was “too predictable” and then proceeded to say he was shocked at the ending. He then laughed every time as we recalled some of the funny lines in the movie. The other friend was asked what his “single of the year” was, a question that stumped the rest of us. He noted that he really liked the new Keane album so he would probably choose a song on there, and then remarked that he hated the single they actually released when I began to sing it. Maybe he just didn’t like my singing.

In the world of e-revenge, people can pan everything from a movie to a restaurant to a doctor faster than ever before. The natural response is to focus on the negative. Since Ron has the injury news on lock-down, Zack is keeping track of the rooks, Scott is combing through the waiver wire for all our benefit, and Dennis is busy conquering the fantasy sports world, today Dime Day looks at Yahoo’s top ranked players pre-season and looks at their production thus far using the critical eye. Does the Matrix get the love in the end?

DescriptionIt was reported on Friday November 17, Miami Heat Center Shaquille O’Neal will need surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee and will be out four to six weeks. It was originally diagnosed that Shaq was out due to a hyperextended left knee. Shaq has already missed five of the Heat’s nine game played so far.

Reported earlier this week on November 16, Milwaukee Bucks Forward Charlie Villanueva will miss at least four weeks due to a torn ligament in his left elbow. He suffered the injury on Tuesday’s game against Atlanta when he took a hard fall on his elbow.

The Denver Nuggets’ Kenyon Martin is done like a Thanksgiving turkey after the leftovers are taken to lunch the week after Thanksgiving. K-Mart had microfracture surgery on his right knee and will be out for the rest of the season. Kenyon had microfracture surgery on his left knee 18 months ago. It is hard enough to recover from microfracture surgery on one knee but for both knees?! I hope this is not the end of Kenyon Martin’s career.

Baron DavisStat’s All Folks will be a week-to-week stock market look at the standard cumulative categories – points, assists, rebounds, three-pointers made, steals, and blocks.  I’ll be calling out the “bulls” and “bears” in each category, in order to help you assess your portfolio of players on your fantasy basketball team(s) and whether you should sell, hold, and/or diversify your assets.

Statistics are through November 9th – 15th.

POINTS

BULLISH

Baron Davis, PG, Golden State Warriors
Last Week’s Numbers of Note: 3 G; 26.0 PPG; 49.1 FG%; 69.2 FT%

Head coach Don Nelson’s up-tempo offense is like Mickey D’s to Davis – he’s lovin’ it!  Although, if you look at the new slimmer and trimmer Davis, he isn’t loving cheeseburgers and fries as much anymore.  While, he’s revealing that he is “the man” in the new offense – scoring points, passing off assists, and actually shooting decent percentages – let’s hope Davis doesn’t pull a Kirstie Alley and flaunt the weight loss.  Baron, just show off your game!

Joe Johnson, PG/SG, Atlanta Hawks
Last Week’s Numbers of Note: 3 G; 30.3 PPG; 50.0 FG%; 82.4 FT%

Okay, tell me if you’ve heard this one before – Joe Johnson is no “ordinary Joe.”  That must have been the twelfth time this week, right?  Well, Johnson just can’t help making news and receiving the adulation of writers as he is just flat-out playing like an MVP right now.  J.J. is showing a healthy appetite for putting the ball in the basket and this week isn’t any sort of fluke as Johnson’s been scoring more than Ken Jennings in a round of Jeopardy from the start of the season.  It should be noted that J.J. ranked third overall last week in scoring with 28.7 points in three games.  Just call him “extraordinary Joe.”

Other Blue-Chippers for the Week

Michael Redd, SG, Milwaukee Bucks – 4 G; 35.0 PPG
Carmelo Anthony, SF, Denver Nuggets – 4 G; 33.5 PPG
Dwyane Wade, PG/SG, Miami Heat – 3 G; 31.7 PPG

Keep An Eye On

Carlos Boozer, PF/C, Utah Jazz – 3 G; 23.0 PPG
Tony Parker, PG, San Antonio Spurs – 3 G; 22.0 PPG

Shaun Livingston
It is time again to take a look at the young stars of the NBA and their fantasy potential. Here we pit a frosh against a sophomore and a junior. Why no senior, you ask? The class of 2003 has already distinguished itself: Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, etc. It seems unfair to pit Flash against a rookie. Staying on point, 3-2-1 Impact features three players who hold down the point guard position.
